L-(+)Sodium glutamate Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesColorless powder
General DescriptionWhite or off-white crystalline powder with a slight peptone-like odor. pH (0.2% solution)7.0.
Air & Water ReactionsWater soluble.
Reactivity ProfileL-(+)Sodium glutamate is an amide. Amides/imides react with azo and diazo compounds to generate toxic gases. Flammable gases are formed by the reaction of organic amides/imides with strong reducing agents. Amides are very weak bases (weaker than water). Imides are less basic yet and in fact react with strong bases to form salts. That is, they can react as acids. Mixing amides with dehydrating agents such as P2O5 or SOCl2 generates the corresponding nitrile. The combustion of these compounds generates mixed oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Fire HazardFlash point data are not available for L-(+)Sodium glutamate, but L-(+)Sodium glutamate is probably combustible.

Ammonium chloride Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Propertieswhite crystalline powder
General DescriptionAmmonium chloride is a white crystalline solid. Ammonium chloride is soluble in water(37%). The primary hazard is the threat posed to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit its spread to the environment. Ammonium chloride is used to make other ammonium compounds, as a soldering flux, as a fertilizer, and for many other uses.
Air & Water ReactionsSoluble in water. Slowly releases hydrogen chloride [USCG, 1999].
Reactivity ProfileAcidic salts, such as Ammonium chloride , are generally soluble in water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydrogen ions and have pH's of less than 7.0. They react as acids to neutralize bases. These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of inorganic acids, inorganic oxoacids, and carboxylic acid. They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible. Many of these compounds catalyze organic reactions.

Ammonium fluoride Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Propertieswhite crystals
General DescriptionAmmonium fluoride is a white crystalline solid. Ammonium fluoride is soluble in water. Ammonium fluoride is noncombustible. Ammonium fluoride is corrosive to aluminum. Ammonium fluoride is used in chemical analysis, in brewing, and as a preservative for wood.
Air & Water ReactionsDissolves in water and forms dilute solution of hydrofluoric acid. May corrode glass, cement, and most metals [USCG, 1999]. Water soluble.
Reactivity ProfileSalts, basic, such as Ammonium fluoride, are generally soluble in water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydroxide ions and have pH's greater than 7.0. They react as bases to neutralize acids. These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of the bases in reactivity group 10 (Bases) and the neutralization of amines. They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible.
Health HazardInhalation of dust may cause irritation of respiratory system. Ingestion is harmful; readily soluble fluorides may be fatal if relatively small quantities are swallowed. Contact with eyes causes local irritation of the mucous membrane. Contact with skin may cause burns. High concs. of fluorine in the urine have been reported following skin contact.

Aluminum oxide Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Propertieswhite powder
General DescriptionWhite odorless crystalline powder. Water insoluble. Properties (both physical and chemical) vary according to the method of preparation; different methods give different crystalline modifications. The variety formed at very high temperature is quite inert chemically.
Air & Water ReactionsInsoluble in water.
Reactivity ProfileAluminum oxide is chemically amphoteric (behaves as a weak acid in the presence of base and as a weak base in the presence of acid). May act catalytically. May cause the exothermic polymerization of ethylene oxide. May cause the vigorous polymerization of vinyl chloride [MCA SD-75, 1970]. The degree of subdivision of the Aluminum oxide may affect the vigor of such reactions.

Ammonium hydroxide Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesColorless liquid
General DescriptionA colorless aqueous solution. Concentration of ammonia ranges up to approximately 30%. Ammonia vapors (which arise from the solution) irritate the eyes.
Air & Water ReactionsWater soluble. Generates a small amount of heat when diluted with water.
Reactivity ProfileAmmonium hydroxide reacts exothermically with acids. Evolves toxic gaseous ammonia with strong bases. Reacts extremely violently with dimethyl sulfate [NFPA 491M 1991]. Reacts with aqueous silver nitrate sodium hydroxide to give a black precipitate of silver nitride. Such a precipitate can explode on stirring [MCA Case History 1554 1968]. Aqueous ammonia and Hg react to form an explosive solid, likely a fulminate. (Thodos, G. Amer. Inst. Chen. Engrs. J., 1964, 10, 274.).
Health HazardTOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
Fire HazardNon-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated.
